B) CASE STUDY & SECONDARY RESEARCH

SNAPCHAT - The Dangers of Snapchat on Mental Health
CASE STUDY

The case study references many negatives in contrast to positives into the mental health effects of the giant social media platform Snapchat. According to a recent survey done by a group of mental health professionals; they discovered that Snapchat plays a part in issues as such as anxiety, loneliness and depression. Although there are other factors that would also play a part in the negative impact of any teenagers mental health. For example bullying can be a factor.

Additionally, as Snapchat is primarily based around sharing photos with other people through the use of stories or 'snaps' to other people. Due to this, many people may look at other peoples filtered photos and may feel body consciousness which can lead to eating disorders or anorexia.

SNAPCHAT - The Pros & Cons of Snapchat

CASE STUDY

This case study primarily references the pros and cons of certain features included in the social media platform Snapchat.

POSITIVES:

Snapchat has many reputable news sources across its platform which gives younger people access to breaking or relevant news without resorting to watching the news on a TV.

Snapchat features 'snaps' which essentially allows anyone to send one-time only pictures which leave no digital footprint.

It's story feature allows for snaps which are only on your story for twenty-four hours maximum; you can also remove the snap from your story at any given moment.

You can see whether people have screen-shotted your pictures or your messages which helps prevent bullying.

NEGATIVES:

As snaps disappear after they're opened, it increases the amount of cyber-bullying as it leaves no proof.

As snaps disappear after they're opened, it increases the amount of underage sexting which also can't be traced as it leaves no proof.

SUMMARY:

Overall, the case study shows that the there are more positives than negatives. However, the negatives outweigh the positives in terms of how much damage it can cause to a young persons mental health and social life.

The Dangers of Social Media - FACEBOOK

CASE STUDY

SUMMARY:

Overall, the video case study shows us a young teenage girl's parents working with an adult that creates a fake Facebook profile and contacts their underage daughter through it. This highlights the dangers of social media as it shows people that anyone anywhere can make up fake identities and children may fall for them. This raises the question of whether more security and laws should be in place to protect underage teenagers/children using social media.

C) RESEARCH SUMMARY

Overall, my primary research portrays that social media can be a positive and negative experience completely dependant on how the user uses social media. For example, everyone seems to make friends on the platforms whilst keeping a positive mood; the research also suggests that introverted people enjoy talking to people through social media rather than face-to-face as they might feel anxiety in person. However, the negatives in my primary research tell us that although people may have a positive experience using social media most of the time, it also affects people negatively as they may get hate comments, be cat-fished or end up arguing with someone online.

In terms of my secondary research, my first case study suggests that social media like Snapchat primarily has a negative effect on the mental health of the teenagers using them as it's proven that it's directly related to issues like anxiety, loneliness and body-image issues. However, in my second case study although Snapchat has negatives mentioned previously, it also tells us that it carries some positives. For example, children don't leave a digital footprint and they get notified straight away if someone saves a text or a picture they sent which helps curb grooming and cyber-bullying. In my third case study it highlights issues with Facebook's security system as an adult and a teenagers parents created a fake profile pretending to be fifteen years old and they proceed to fake a kidnapping. This tells us that although social media can be a great platform for meeting people all over the world, it is in dire need of more security features to help prevent older people talking to kids inappropriately.
